I observe a lot of movies and have seen all of the “classics” and O’ Brother Where Art Thou rates among the best of them – no kidding! Twenty years from now, they’ll be airing this film on AMC and TCM alongside the likes of North by Northwest, The Wild Bunch and How Green Was My Valley.

The memoir is completely inspiring and the cinematography is fair. Realize that filming took area in June/July when the Southern countryside was a lush, verdant green. That bone dry, depression-era dust bowl blooming is a wonder of digital editing.

The Coen brothers have done two things that are all too rare in Hollywood these days. First, their screenplay is fresh (yes, it’s loosely based on Homer’s Odyssey but to evaluate the film solely on this chronicle framework is to overlook the other aspects of the film) . Second, they’ve produced a film that captivates not with multi-million dollar action sequences and the latest Moby track but with substantial dialogue and an authentic blues/bluegrass soundtrack (well worth buying) that is as remarkable a character in the movie as the three principals – Ulysses Everett McGill (George Clooney), Delmar O’Donnell (Tim Blake Nelson) and Pete Hogwallop (John Turturro) . The eclectic cast (that also includes Charles Durning, Holly Hunter, Stephen Root and John Goodman) turns in superbly acted performances across the board. Clooney, who all too often plays 2 dimensional characters, gives an award-worthy performance in what is unquestionably his best role to date. Those not familiar with Nelson or Turturro will be impressed by these wonderfully skilled actors.

I will say that a lot of people have told me that they didn’t care for this film, which I fetch incomprehensible. I’m not distinct what more you could ask for in a movie.

The Coen brothers have a cult following, but until I saw this movie, I didn’t count myself among the masses that treasure the Coens. However, with this movie, this brother team has cemented their reputation as serious and skilled filmmakers with a lot to say and a stylish diagram of saying it.

This movie is a loose retelling of “The Odyssey” by Homer, plot in the Depression-era Deep South. George Clooney, John Turturro, and Tim Blake Nelson fabricate an unlikely team of escaped convicts who embark on a hurry of the curious and fantastic. Survey for the appearance of many famed Odyssey allusions, such as the Sirens and the Cyclops (among others) . The Coens’ quirky retract on this classic memoir is exquisite and perfectly executed, and the script is beautifully and humorously written. The sets and filming are artistic and a bit mythical, and the casting choices are objective stout. The film is peopled with intelligent characters, in classic Coen brothers fashion. Watch for gigantic supporting characters played by John Goodman, Holly Hunter, Charles Durning, and others.

And that’s not all! Interwoven in this film are huge depression-era songs and some new songs, with favorable music direction by T-bone Burnett. Who says Moulin Rouge is the first movie in a long while to bewitch the musical format? This movie is honest as powerful a musical as Baz Luhrmann’s much-hyped movie.

I really fill that this movie reaches heights that previous Coen brothers movies (even Fargo) haven’t reached. In addition, I beget this movie was slighted by the Academy during Oscar time. This movie was one of the best films of the year, and excelled in every aspect a film can be awarded for.

This investigates two deteriorating waterways: the Chesapeake on the East Flee and Puget Sound on the West. This documentary was two hours long; it takes a dedicated viewer to perceive the whole thing.

Waters all over the world now have wearisome zones where nothing can live. Killer whale babies are dying because of pollutants. Chicken dookey is poisoning the water. Fish and frogs are hermaphroditic. All the highways and streets aren’t allowing water to soak into the ground the scheme Mother Nature intended. It was difficult to hear all of this. It can perform one lose hope.

The work does try to bring up two points, but unbiased barely. First, this will eventually affect humans. The same pollutants killing sea life can end human babies. Second, things can be done. Areas with mixed businesses, residences, and public transportation originate the need for cars less pressing.

To an extent, this documentary lets the interior of the US off the hook. However, something tells me green activits could have pointed to many ways in which Lake Michigan or the Mississippi River is messed up too.

Some say the truth shall space you free, but it definite is hard to stomach.

The Crawling Recognize (1958) had numerous monikers like The Creeping See, The Flying Peer, and even Creature from Another World, but started out as a British television serial titled The Trollenberg Panic (this is the title that appears in the beginning of this version of the film) . Apparently the series was current enough to warrant the making of film versions for European and American distribution. The film stars Forrest Tucker, who, while not an fresh member of the series, was brought in by the British studios in order to better promote the film in America. Novel series actors that transferred from the television version to the film version were Janet Munro and Laurence Payne.

The film starts off with three climbers on the side of a mountain, and one of the climbers suffers a serious case of death from the loss of his head (off-screen) . The other two freak out and then we slit to three characters on a converse, two being the Pilgrim sisters Sarah (Jennifer Jayne) and Anne (Janet Munro) while the third being Alan Brooks (Forrest Tucker) . All three bag off at the same end, and perform for a hotel arrive the rank of the Swiss Alps. Brooks arrived at the interrogate of a friend, Professor Crevett (Warren Mitchell), who works in a nearby observatory and has disturbing news. The two sisters, one with telepathic abilities (Munro’s character), are inexplicably drawn to the mountain. We soon learn that something is stealing mountain climber’s heads, leading some villagers to enjoy an dreadful snowman with a guillotine is on the loose, aptly called `The De-Nogginizer’ (okay, no one said it, but I understanding it) . Brooks makes his scheme to the observatory and meets with his friend Professor Crevett. Crevett gives Brooks the ten cent tour, bragging on and on about his wonderfully extraordinary, technologically advanced and highly fortified observatory to which Brooks cuts it shorts and asks why he was dragged out here. Dr. Crevett shows Brooks a cloud on the mountain, and makes a reference to a shared past experience and believes there is a link to the cloud and the original spate of deaths on the mountain. Turns out there is…

Not grand point in going into the narrative too mighty more, spoiling the fun for everyone, but I will stutter you this, there are more deaths by beheading, giant eyeball creatures, zombies, mysterious ice clouds, and some other cold surprises. As humorous as all this sounds, the overall sense of the film is serious…even though the viewer will fracture out into laughter, especially at the special effects. The tentacled eyeball creatures various appearances fair do not allow for the keeping of a straight face. I couldn’t support wonder if they had kept the mystique of the fog, revealing less about what was inside, if that would have made the film powerful more scary than it was…the tension was certainly there up until the point when the creatures were revealed, as the cloud hid its’ secrets well, prowling the mountain, signaling death was coming. Well, being the 50′s, you needed some unbelievable creature, be it giant eyeballs, flying brains, or disembodied hands. If you didn’t, you were beautiful mighty cheating the audience. I really enjoyed the number of elements keen in the memoir, and how nicely these things were tied together. That’s not to say everything works and there are no dwelling holes, but the film is tight, and any missing station points are minor and not very detectable. This film is honest all out 50′ sci-fi fun, grand in the vein of another movie that came out in the same year, Fiend Without a Face. Cornball? Maybe, but certainly worth watching. Forrest Tucker is tremendous taking time off from his usual westerner/action films to star here. He certainly doesn’t seem to fit the portion in the beginning; at least to me, but as the film progresses, he makes it work, like pounding a square peg into a round hole. Janet Munro is pleasing, and I had unbiased recently saw her in The day the Earth Caught Fire (1961), but the true explore catcher was the actress who played the character of her sister, Sarah Pilgrim, Jennifer Jayne. Yowsa! Along with being an actress, I found out she is also a writer, and is responsible for (as Jay Fairbanks) the comedy/horror/musical Son of Dracula (1974) starring Harry Nilsson, Ringo Starr, and a slew of other musical talents.

Image and Wade Williams explain a really nice looking wide hide print here. The report is crisp and sure, and suffers exiguous deterioration. Also, this is the European edition; hence the beginning credits stating The Trollenberg Alarm as the title. A trailer is available on the disc, but it certainly suffered the ravages of time, looking very feeble and damaged. There is also liner notes written by journalist, columnist, film historian, radio and television commentator David Del Valle, who is considered to be one of the leading authorities on the horror/science-fiction/cult and fantasy film genres. If you can pick up a better giant, killer eyeballs from position movie I’d like to seek it.

Cookieman108

I saw this film as a child and it really frightened me. It doesn’t fear me any more, but I level-headed care for it. It has a colossal script, ample directing, and really frosty monsters. The dismay begins gradually with mountain climbers disappearing and later being found with their heads ripped off. Enter Forrest Tucker (star of many fims and the TV series F troop) as a U.N official dragged into the investigation of the “accidents.” Also starring in the film is the stunning Janet Munro as a psychic who can communicate with the aliens. The tension builds up as the cloud, where the monsters veil, gradually moves towards the local village. The first appearance of the giant, crawling monsters with one gawk is pleasurable. Although the small special effects indicate in the climactic scene as the besieged humans fight assist with Molotov cocktails, it is level-headed first rate. Trivia note: following this film Janet Munro would do a series of Walt Disney flicks including Darbey O’Gill and the Diminutive People (where she sings a duet with Sean Connery!), and Swiss Family Robinson. She would also star in the sci-fi classic The Day the Earth Caught Fire.

I have reviewed all the individual DVD’s in this series, so this won’t be a review that focuses on spot details. Whether you like it or dislike it, there is no denying that Evangelion looms titanic in any investigation of anime as an art get. In truth, there is very slight to abhor, but director Hideaki Anno has achieve so worthy into it that the yarn is prone to select sudden changes in direction. Usually suitable after the viewers reflect that they have everything figured out. This is intentional, but sometimes it is a source of temporary discontent.

Put simply this is the legend of three fourteen year ancient children – Shinji Ikari, Rei Ayanami, and Asuka Langley – who have been bred to be able to merge with giant bioengineered creatures called Evangelions, EVA’s for short. Their task is to protect a post apocalypse world from the invasions of giant angels. These are creatures worthy like the EVA’s, whose agenda is not completely determined. Of course, the truth is that this is perhaps 30% of the epic, which is a combination of psychodrama, metaphysical mystery play, and an investigation into the potential of the human bustle. In fact, nothing is ever exactly what it seems.

As an example of the many layers to the chronicle, there is a gigantic amount of Judeo-Christian symbolism worked into the anecdote. The Sephiroth, the Kabalah’s tree of life, the Tedious Sea Scrolls, the Lance of Longinus, and cruciform images abound. All of this adds up to an impending sense of apocalypse, but the truth us far stranger. Hideaki Anno has intentionally customary this symbolism to effect an atmosphere that is ‘mysterious’ to his Japanese audiences. Yet there is a whole other spiritual layer that is uniquely Japanese, drawing deeply from the Kojiki, an archaic creation memoir. This is something many non-Japanese viewers will miss.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Neon Genesis Evangelion – Perfect Collection! Click Here

This is one of many cases of the subtle undercurrents that execute this series far more than an action oriented mecha narrative. Characters are complex, and build rather than conclude single sided. Anno’s artistic control creates a visual layering that is impartial as just as the ploy. Careful attention to details will reward the viewer with all manner of hints and indicators of what is to reach and what is happening. All production values are obedient and Anno shows he is willing to rob genuine creative risks in his efforts to communicate.

Of course, if you are considering buying the series, this collection really is the only sensible procedure to purchase it. Despite the alarming notice effect, it is smooth noteworthy better priced than the one at a time charge. Whether you lift, rent, or borrow, this is one of the anime series that must be seen. You will not be disappointed.

For the represent, I am not a grand fan of Anime. Maybe I am looking in the spoiled places, but everytime I initiate to gape a series it ends up as mindless action or mindless comedy. I’ve only seen 2 that can truly be called lustrous. Serial Experiment: Lain was one. Neon Genesis Evangelion is the other.

I cannot say enough obedient about this series. It it quite simply the best part of work to ever have been broadcast. Anywhere. Nothing to reach out of America, nothing to arrive out of Japan, nothing anywhere can meet the sheer brilliance of the 26 episodes of this most disturbing, heartwarming, and glowing anime.

Evangelion starts out simply enough. Ikari Shinji is a 14-year aged boy who gets called upon to pilot a giant mecha, called an Evangelion. He, Rei, and Asuka are the three children that have the ability to pilot these machines. Simple enough, correct? The first 3/4′s of the series deals with the relationship between these 3 and the various leaders of NERV, the organization they work with. It is highly moving, beautifully drawn, and very appealing. Alot of the middle episodes are very light hearted, and nothing too wonderful, but exquisite in their occupy moral.

It is in the last quater of the series that it becomes incandescent. Shinji, Asuka, Rei, and Misato (one of the leaders of NERV) become very introspective. By this point their abet stories and personalities are developed beyond any rational expectation. I don’t want to spoil the captivating experience of this anime, but let me honest say that it is incredibly philosophical, psychological, and depressing.

Oh, and for the like of all that is holy, DO NOT listen to anyone who tells you not to contemplate the last 2 episodes. They are, simply keep, fools. The last 2 episodes are jarring, disturbing and very hard to sight. They do not give perfect closer to the whole series (don’t pains Dwelling [enthusiasts], Slay of Evangelion, due out in September ties up all the loose ends) . But they made the series for me. You have to notice it to maintain it and I am not going to spoil it by saying anything more. Fair trust that it is simply breathtaking…

Just before legendary director William Wyler died, equally legendary director Billy Wilder was interviewed about his feelings about Wyler’s films, from “Best Years of Our Lives” to “Roman Holiday” to “Ben Hur” to “Comical Girl.”

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Best Years of Our Lives! Click Here

Wilder, a tough cookie who hates schmaltz and sentiment, the director of such classics as “Some Like it Hot,” “The Apartment,” “The Seven Year Itch” and “Sunset Boulevard,” suddenly got emotional, expressing expansive affection for “The Best Years of Our Lives,” noting that it was one of the best films he had ever seen.

He reacted the design I reacted. He said that it was the only film that he could remember (of course, this was well before “Saving Private Ryan” was released in 1998), where he and the entire audience were drenched in tears within the first 10 minutes. It was an unforgettable experience for him, and he recognized immediately that “The Best Years of Our Lives” was obviously a deeply personal work for Wyler, where every scene, every frame, every label of music and word of dialogue, rang legal with authenticity and emotion. This was Wyler’s territory. He knew the material. And many of the scenes that were shot mirrored his maintain experiences when he returned home from war.

This is why, after so many viewings, I level-headed can’t obtain over the fact that no matter how many times I say to myself, “I’m not going to be moved by this or that scene,” I fail miserably. I objective can’t attend it. To say that this is a sizable film is an understatement of the highest order. And yet I can only count on one hand the number of friends I know who have seen this film from begin to achieve. I contemplate the running length has something to do with it. You never study it on commercial television at all and unless you’re lucky enough to have cable, you’ll miss it entirely. And it’s not a film that people are banging down the doors to rent.

The fantastic thing about “The Best Years of Our Lives” is that it peaceful holds up beautifully, unlike a lot of films that seem awkward or stilted. Fredric March, as the patriarch of the family (in an Oscar winning role), is stupendous. His acting and delivery of lines seems effortless and spontaneous, not the product of a script recited from memory. And to have Myrna Loy as his partner and the unbelievable Teresa Wright playing his daughter (the latter an Oscar winner a few years earlier in “Mrs. Miniver”), how can you lose?

Like all substantial films, time has no meaning. The epic sweeps you along like a ample wave — a flow — that you never want to waste. The eminent “long hallway homecoming shot” that appears in the first 10 minutes of the film — I don’t care that it’s the scene that most people remember and is usually the ONLY scene that turns up in any highlight reel of greatest films ever made — it gets me every time.

And the ending, the last line from the movie, the one uttered by Dana Andrews — despite the sentimental setting — is so fabulously understated and cynical and yet filled with such hope, that you can’t attend but be — what I relate as being — “happily devastated.” It’s a astonishing ending that purposely leaves you guessing about what will become of the characters played by Teresa Wright and Dana Andrews, but you can’t benefit but feel that their future looks intellectual in spite of their apparent set of destitution.

I honest wish more people would gape this film. There’s a love chest of broad movies from the past that people overlook every day. This is one of them. I pity people who composed steal or rent movies based on slick packaging alone.

I would rather pay $10 to peer this film on the astronomical mask or less than $20 to bear this film so I can examine it on a miniature conceal — than pay about $4 to rent junk that has a marvelous looking box — and a few spacious essential reviews from people you’ve never heard of.

Some films are trustworthy enough to rent, but only a few films are excellent enough to select. “The Best Years of Our Lives” is a film to Grasp.

“The Best Years of Our Lives” is a compelling dramatic masterpiece, and certainly one of the best films ever made. It’s not as well known today as other pieces from the period, such as “Casablanca” or “Citizen Kane”, but it is nevertheless a classic that deserves ranking with those same films.

This film paints a narrate of the struggles of World War II servicemen that they faced AFTER the war was over. It was a more personal struggle of men returning home after being away for many years, and after experiencing horrors that their loved ones could never fully understand. They return home as changed people, and reach home to changed lives.

The sage of such a homecoming experienced by thousands of men after World War II is told from the perspective of three fictional characters: Captain Fred Derry, a bombadier in the Army Air Corps (Dana Andrews), Sergeant Al Stevenson, an Army infantryman (Frederich March), and Seamen Homer Parrish(Harold Russell) . They happen to meet on the plane to their hometown, having never met before, and immediately compose a bond built upon mutual notion of the experiences of war and the anxieties of returning home again.

Captain Derry came from a terrible background before the war, and married a blond bombshell (Virgnia Mayo) while in the Air Corps. He hopes to return home to a better life, a nice home with his wife, and a better job. This was not to be, as Derry struggles to try and deal with poor job prospects (no one in the civilian world needs a bombadier) and a cheating wife. In a poignant moment in the film, Derry (at his lowest) tells his Father to throw away the citations for his medals, because “they don’t mean anything”. His Father reads the one for the Well-known Flying Sinister, signed by General Jimmy Doolittle, and a observe of pride comes over the extinct man’s face for his son’s heroism that makes you want to weep and cheer all at the same time. It also makes the viewer examine how criminal it was for such a man to be made to feel worthless.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Best Years of Our Lives! Click Here

Sergeant Stevenson comes home to better circumstances, being a banker in the civilian world with a wife, two grown children, and a nice apartment. But he too must confront troubles, as Stevenson must regain to know a family that progressed without him, and balance his job with his desire to help servicemen seeking G.I. Bill loans. He battles with his bank’s bosses over the loan enlighten, and also struggles with alcoholism.

Seamen Parrish’s problems are the most certain. He lost his hands during the war, and now must arrive home to his family and fiancee with hooks for hands. The actor who potrayed Parrish, Harold Russell, was a valid disable traditional, and lends credibility to the role that no one else could have due to valid life experience.

This may seem like a depressing film, but it is actually uplifting in its entirety because it does point to that hope doesn’t die, and that you really can arrive home again after all. It is also a film of historical importance due to the insights it provides into post-World War II America, and the struggles of veterans in the post-war years. Captain Derry, Sergeant Stevenson, and Seamen Parrish, and their individual struggles to reclaim their lives can provide the student of history an distinguished perspective on the many proper life veterans who returned home, and the country of the time they returned home to.

The film has certainly earned accolades over the years. It won the Oscar for Best Recount of 1946. It was named by the American Film Institute as one of the 100 Best Movies ever made, and was also named as one of the most principal films of all time by the National Archives for the National Film Registry.

“The Best Years of Our Lives” is not to be missed for both its dramatic poignancy and its insight into an essential period of American History. And its a dazzling study to gaze in DVD quality.

Cowboy Bebop is, by far, one of the best TV series to approach from Japan. Impartial don’t catch it too seriously, it is, after all, the ’70s and the Wild West mixed into one (someone beat me to that punch already, damn!) One honest needs to gaze the Low-Rider/Horseback care scramble to observe that.

But it doesn’t arrive out the worse for wear mixing two wildly different genres, and the fifth DVD shows this off. Even after 21 episodes this display is more than fun to contemplate. Basically, if you’re wondering whether to purchase up this or something novel, don’t worry: This has more of the same fun of the series.

Cowboy Bebop is, in this reviewer’s understanding, the finest series that anime currently has to offer. The animation is righteous, the writing is consistently edifying, the English stammer work is amazingly respectable, and the soundtrack (provided by Yoko Kanno) is absolutely incandescent throughout the entire series. It’s a pity that the series had such a short run– what’s available in these six DVD volumes constitutes the entire twenty-six episode series. Nevertheless, this is one series every anime fan must have, and a series I would also recommend to fans of TV shows such as Miami Vice.

Cowboy Bebop’s basic structure allows each episode to be a full-fledged tale all its enjoy, with the main characters– Spike, Jett, Faye, and Edward– serving to connect them all. While there is a consistency to the entire series outside of the characters– mainly concerning each character’s exploration of his/her identity– this is a more episodic anime series than something such as Evangelion, and yet far less formulaic than Dragon Ball Z and its brethren. I cannot stress how incredibly splendid the writing is here– each episode is a self-contained legend burly of integrity: sometimes dramatic, sometimes gloomy, sometimes comical, but always effective each time without sacrificing any of the show’s core values.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Cowboy Bebop – Session 5! Click Here

Each DVD disc in this series is a bargain– five episodes per disc for Volumes One and Two, and four episodes per disc thereafter. Extras are diminutive, but the video quality is outstanding, and both Japanese/English tracks are provided, with English subtitles. The English train acting is very impressive– dialogue is aloof shining following the translation, lip synching is dead-on, and the thunder actors are almost as endearing as the characters they recount.

While Volume Five is as noteworthy worth a lift as the other discs in this series, it has some crude points that manage to poke it down a bit. The main one that should be addressed is the “Pierrot le Fot” episode, which concerns a man bred as a perfect killing machine. While this episode contains a mighty fight scene, it’s one of the more flawed episodes of Cowboy Bebop; a backstory sequence serves to consume the viewer’s disdain for this episode’s villain correct before said villain is killed and never mentioned again– similar to the case of an imprisoned criminal who is found to be innocent factual before he is executed, yet this information is judged to be insignificant afterwards because the criminal is already tiresome. … “Boogie Woogie Feng Shui” and “Wild Horses” are consuming but largely forgettable relative to the other episodes in this series. “Cowboy Funk” is definitely the highlight of this disc: the character of Andy is hilarious, as is the Teddy Bomber.

Gary Cooper was 40 years extinct when he made “Sergeant York,” and his Southern accent is customary at best, but those things do not demolish up detracting all that noteworthy from his performance or this film. Directed in 1941 by Howard Hawks, “Sergeant York” has strong propagandistic elements. A whiskey-drinking hell-raiser, Alvin C. York undergoes a religious conversation when lighting strikes his gun and almost kills him. His goal in life becomes getting himself a fraction of bottom land so he can propose to Gracie Williams (Joan Leslie) . Things go against him, but Alvin holds his temper and does what the Worthy Book philosophize him to do. Then World War I breaks out and Alvin is drafted. Unable to fetch region as a conscientious objector because of his religious beliefs, Alvin has to advance to terms with the obligations of citizenship versus the dictates of scripture. The film is surprisingly even handed in showing Alvin debating the matter with his superiors. In the slay he comes to the only conclusion possible for men of conscience forced to go to war: killing is justified to put lives.

On the Argonne Forest battlefield Alvin, made a corporal because of his marksmanship, becomes a hero when his unit is trapped and he single-handedly kills 25 and captures 132 prisoners. Called the “greatest civilian solider of the war” by General Pershing, York received the Medal of Honor, France’s Croix de Guerre, and basically every high medal the Allies could bestow upon him. But while the film does a worthy job of showing York’s plucky exploits, ultimately it is more about the man that the solider. Cooper’s sense of dignity is well-suited to the role, which gives more weight to York’s life in the hills of Tennessee than to the war in Europe. What he learned encourage home clearly stands Alvin in suited stead on the battlefield.

The supporting cast of “Sergeant York” is truly outstanding, with George Tobias as “Pusher” Ross, Ward Bond as Ike Botkin and Robert Porterfield as Zeb Andrews. Both Walter Brennan as Pastor Rosier Pile and Margaret Wycherly as Mother York received well deserved Oscar nominations in the supporting category. Brennan marvelously underplays his role as Alvin’s spiritual leader while Wycherly is simply the anchor for the entire film. Mother York says slight and moves slowly, but everything comes out through her eyes. The scene where Alvin finally gets home from the war and sees his mother at the deliver region is especially touching: his face lights up completely and her “I’m correct tickled to spy you, son” is the equivalent of other people crying and screaming for joy. In addition to Cooper winning his first Oscar as Best Actor, William Holmes receives one for Film Editing. This is one of those movies I never come by tired of seeing and it remains the ideal film to peer on Memorial Day.

I’m a native Tennessean, and I grew up hearing stories about one of Tennessee’s greatest war heroes, Sgt. Alvin C. York. There’s even a statue of him at the Nashville capitol. York was one of the most unlikely heroes of World War I, yet he surprised both his comrades and his commanding officers with his reckless bravery in combat. Although the propaganda finish of the movie was intended to earn America keen in World War II, the heartfelt performances, especially from oscar winner Gary Cooper and Walter Brennan, create this a must-see classic.

Gary Cooper stars as Alvin C. York, and as the film begins, he and his two drinking pals, Ike (Ward Bond) and Buck (Noah Berry Jr.) are causing mischief in their tiny community in rural Tennessee. Pastor Pile (Walter Brennan) continually tries to befriend York change his base ways and become a faithful Christian, but York is in no mood for preaching. When Alvin meets radiant young Gracie (Joan Leslie) he immediately falls in worship and starts working for a local farmer to win land so that he can ask Gracie to marry him. But he’s double-crossed by the greedy farmer, who sells the land to York’s worst enemy. Grabbing his rifle, York sets out on a rainy night to select revenge on the tainted farmer, only to have his gun destroyed by lightning. That’s when Alvin finally realizes that the Lord wants him to change his substandard ways, so he quits drinking and becomes a devout Christian.

The scrape is, fair as York is changing his life America declares war on Germany, but he insists on staying out of it, saying “I ain’t a-goin’ to war. War is killin’ and the Book is agin’ killin’, so war is agin’ the Book.” But his draft board won’t listen to his religious outburst and Pastor Pile convinces him to join the army rather than be arrested. Next, York is in France, where his years of hunting experience have made him a crackshot, and he finds himself promoted to corporel. When his limited unit is pinned down during a bloody assault against German machine-gun nests and his superiors are killed or wounded, Alvin takes charge and bravely attacks on his enjoy, killing at least 20 enemy soldiers and capturing well over a hundred.

York is decorated for gallantry, promoted to sergeant, and returns home to a nation-wide heroes welcome, finally coming succor to Tennessee where his family and his girlfriend Gracie have a ample surprise of their absorb. Though the Southern accents in this are a dinky too forced, and the portrayel of Army officers is contrivance too flattering, this enduring classic has always held a special state in my heart. Enjoy it or not, grand of the script is taken directly from Sgt. York’s diary, and York himself served as an advisor throughout the filming. It was York who insisted on Gary Cooper playing his character, and Cooper ended up giving perhaps the strongest performance of his career. I only hope we don’t have to wait distinguished longer before this classic gets a dvd release.

My youngest son is at Marine boot camp now. After he left I wanted to peruse anything that I opinion could relieve me to connect with him . This DVD is gigantic. It was filmed at Parris Island,SC-where my son is- it gave us a petite explanation of some of the training he is getting. I recommend it for all families with son’s or daughters going to boot camp

I bought this DVD thinking I would present parts of it to my high school classes. There was so great whining going on with the female marine recruits that I had to shut it off before I gagged. If you are looking for a DVD that shows accurate Marine Corps boot camp training, this isn’t for you. I threw it away. I’m a outmoded SGT in the Corps, and I would be embarassed to demonstrate it to my high school students.
